European Expansion & The Dutch "Klinkers" (17th – 18th Century)

  • Street Paving Era: These durable klinkers were used to pave streets, canalsides, and courtyards, proving ideal for heavy horse-drawn traffic and harsh, wet winters.

  • Global Export: European settlers brought Dutch and English brickmaking traditions—and early clay pavers—to North America as ship ballast and construction materials.


The Industrial Revolution & "Brick Street" Era (19th Century)

  • Mechanized Production: The invention of modern clay-extruding machines and automated pug mills in the mid-1800s made mass production of uniform, high-strength pavers possible.

  • Paving the New World: Charleston, West Virginia, laid the first modern clay brick street in the United States in 1870. The success of clay streets led to widespread municipal adoption across America and Europe throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

  • The Indiana Brickyard & Speedway: Heavy-duty vitrified clay pavers (often called "paving blocks" or "street paving brick") became famous for withstand heavy traffic, culminating in the paving of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909 with 3.2 million clay bricks, earning it the nickname "The Brickyard."


Decline and The Modern Hardscape Revival (Mid-20th Century – Present)

  • Asphalt & Concrete Shift: With the rise of the automobile and cheaper paving alternatives in the 1920s–1950s, cities increasingly turned to asphalt and concrete for high-speed roadways.

  • Shift to Architectural Hardscaping: Rather than disappearing, clay pavers transitioned from vehicular street paving to architectural, residential, and commercial applications (patios, walkways, historic plazas, and pedestrian malls).

  • Modern Manufacturing: Today, clay pavers are manufactured using high-tech extruders and modern tunnel kilns firing at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F (1,100°C). This creates non-fading, colorfast pavers with extremely low water absorption and high compressive strength.
